Sumo robots are hobby and enertainment robots inspired by Japon sumo wrestlers. The sumo robots join in tournaments in which two sumo robots attempt to push each other out of the sumo robot arena. Sumo robot arena is a circle like the original sumo wrestling arena. The surface of that arena is black and there is a white circle around the arena.
Sumo robots are divided into five categories according to the dimensions of sumo robots and the arena.

 Sumo robots have the capabilities of being autonomous, detecting the opponent sumo robot and detecting the white path around the sumo robot arena. To detect the opponent sumo robots the most commonly used sensors are infrared sensors. Sensors like QRD1114 IR reflecting sensors and CNY70 reflective optical sensors are used to detect the white path around the sumo robot arena.
Sumo robots are one of the most favourite tournament categories of the robot competitions all around the world. Every robot competition has its own rules for the sumo robot tournaments with some common points.
In general a sumo robot match consists of three rounds. The robot that wins two of the three rounds wins the match. At the beginning of a round two sumo robots are placed on the arena in a position that they do not see each other and they are turned on. A sumo robot must start to move after 5 seconds.
Sumo robots are designed in a way that they do not destroy the opponent and the arena. If something like a spacer, a sticker etc falls down from a sumo robot, the sumo robot will be disualified.
